As you may already realize, I’ve become quite the green smoothie addict. One of the two things I pretty much always include are bananas. (The other is apples, or in a pinch, applesauce! ) In order to be a little thriftier, I’ve been buying conventional versus organic. (NOT for apples.) Because you peel them it’s not as important for them to be organic, and organic bananas [here] are $ 0.99/lb versus the conventional for $0.69/lb. Well, I noticed that Winn-Dixie sells bananas in little paper tote bags that are “ready for baking”. They’re generally not REALLY ripe, but maybe a few spots and still a little green at the tops. These are $0.39/lb! And a lot of times you can get full bags of ripe organic bananas for $0.49/lb.
What does that translate to? I got 9 bananas that were ready to be peeled and frozen for $1.79. Pretty good deal : ) If you happen to live near a Winn-Dixe, there are also some good deals to be had on their basic line of organics that includes canned beans and tomatoes, raisins, applesauce, non-dairy milk, etc.
